plot

Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) joins a secret division of Starfleet tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and faces the sins of her past.

scope

Working under Supervising Producer Jason Zimmerman and VFX Supervisor Brian Tatosky, Ghost VFX artists in Copenhagen, with support from teams in the UK and India, handled 76 shots including complex creatures and environments, a spaceship flight sequence, stage work, high-res effects shots, backgrounds, and landscapes.

“We worked on several creatures, all of which presented unique creative challenges. There’s a nano creature we handled that involved an actor in prosthetics. We animated aspects of the character, and the result had to visually portray some humor, which fits with the overall tone and plot of the film.” - VFX Supervisor Ivan Kondrup-Jensen

"Another creature we worked on was a shape-shifting alien with tentacles that transforms. Visually, you see an actor turn into tentacles, then turn into a different actor. We started by providing the client with 2d concepts. Then once they selected what they liked, we worked from there. It was a challenge to pull off – and a lot of fun.” - VFX Supervisor Martin Gaardeler
