Millie Cox
Head of Artist Management, UK
Tell me a little bit about what your role will be at Ghost VFX?
I joined Ghost VFX in the summer of 2022 after having spent nearly eight years in a similar position in Vancouver. My role is a blend of VFX Production and Human Resources. I collaborate closely with each project to ensure appropriate resource allocation, while also working with the new business team to accurately forecast upcoming resource needs. Additionally, I focus on supporting our creative team by overseeing their career development, managing contracts, conducting performance reviews, and being the point person for the crew.
Please describe your background in VFX?
I commenced my career in visual effects at MPC in April 2010, dedicating nearly five years to the recruitment of top global VFX talent. In 2015, I transitioned to internal artist management, a role I have held continuously since.
In your own words how would you describe what you do?
I take care of my team.
What part of the job are you most passionate about?
I am super committed to promoting equality within the workplace and ensuring that all employees at Ghost VFX and Ingenuity Studios in the UK receive the utmost care and support. Outside of my work, I’m a mother to two mischievous boys who are 3 and 5.
Is there a particular project you worked on that you can discuss? If so, what was the project and what was the work you contributed?
I am not an artist and don't work directly on shows. Nevertheless, I have a project from my time at Method Studios that will forever hold a significant place in my memory. The project involved overseeing the internship program and working in close partnership with graduates and educational institutions. I found great fulfilment in the enthusiasm and passion displayed by recent graduates as they embarked on their journey into the realm of visual effects.
Any advice to others looking to break into VFX?
The response may vary depending on whether the question is made from a creative perspective or based on my personal experiences. From a creative standpoint, I strongly advocate for continuous networking whenever possible. The relationships you cultivate are invaluable, and the feedback you can obtain on your work through discussions with peers is equally beneficial. I recall a significant encounter from a decade ago at FMX with an individual aspiring to enter the industry; we maintained our friendship over the years, and not too long ago I had the opportunity to hire them as a CG Supervisor. Establishing connections within our relatively small industry is crucial.
From my own viewpoint, given my administrative background, I always suggest beginning at the entry level in any position to secure a foothold and gradually advance. Personal and professional growth requires time, so it is important to appreciate the journey.
Where do you see the VFX industry headed in the next 5 years? What excites you about the future?
In the next 5 years, I’m hopeful that the VFX industry will see significant growth and innovation. Key trends driving this include the rise of immersive technologies such as VR and AR, the increasing demand for high-quality visual effects in film, TV, and streaming content, and the rapid development of machine learning and AI in the creation of VFX.
Additionally, the expansion of global collaboration and outsourcing in VFX production is expected to reshape the industry landscape, enabling companies to tap into diverse talent pools and deliver high-quality work more cost-effectively.
Overall, I feel the future of the VFX industry holds tremendous opportunities for innovation, creativity, and collaboration, especially with the additional tax incentives coming to the UK. With continued investment in talent and technology, the industry will be set to redefine visual storytelling and push the boundaries of what is possible in creating compelling and immersive digital experiences.
Is there anything else you’d like to mention or add?
I love my role at Ghost VFX & Ingenuity Studios, my passion for people and their passion for creating amazing work is what I thrive on.
